A Deep Ecological Philosopher

“A deep ecologist with a keen interest in political philosophy and applied ethics.”

Professor Md. Munir Hossain Talukder with some of his enthusiastic students founded the Deep Ecology Environmental Forum (DEEF) on February 25, 2020 and is serving as the Advisor of the forum. Currently, Professor Talukder is teaching at Philosophy Department, Jahangirnagar University as permanent faculty and at History and Philosophy Department, North South University as adjunct faculty.

He is an Editorial Board Member of Developing World Bioethics Journal — the number one international professional platform for bioethics research related to developing world issues — and a member of the international advisory board of the European journal Annals of Philosophy, Social and Human Disciplines. He was born in Jhalokathi district, one of the most climate change-affected regions in Bangladesh.

Professor Talukder earned his Bachelor Honours and Masters degrees in Philosophy from Jahangirnagar University, both with first class. In 1996, the M.U. Ahmed Gold Medal was conferred to him for securing first position in his Masters examination. He subsequently obtained an MPhil degree in Philosophy from Jahangirnagar University in 2005.

He then completed a double Masters in Applied Ethics with specialisation in bioethics from Linköping University, Sweden and Utrecht University, the Netherlands, under the prestigious Erasmus Mundus Scholarship of the European Commission.

He enrolled in the PhD programme at the National University of Singapore under a full research scholarship and graduated in 2013, having researched extensively on Comparative Environmental Philosophy and Ethics. He returned to Bangladesh and was promoted as Professor at Jahangirnagar University in May 2015.

His research works have been published from various countries including the USA, Singapore, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Thailand and Malaysia — some translated into foreign languages including Italian.

His book Nature and Life: Essays on Deep Ecology and Applied Ethics was published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, United Kingdom, in July 2018. Professor Talukder serves as an editorial board member, reviewer and PhD examiner in many universities globally. He also served as an IRB/IEC ethicist and invited visiting faculty in notable institutions.
